Selective mutism

Sometimes a child who is very talkative at home may become quiet or withdrawn in new or unfamiliar settings. While shyness is common, it can sometimes indicate something more. Around 1 in 140 children are affected by selective mutism—a type of anxiety disorder.

Watch this video for information and advice for families whose children speak confidently at home but find it much harder to talk in places such as nurseries, schools, or around unfamiliar people.
