Receptive language is how we understand words and sentences that we hear or read. Children usually understand language before they can speak it.

Expressive Language
Expressive Language can mean using either spoken words or non-verbal communication such as signs or pictures to communicate. Pointing, looking and reaching are also forms of expressive language and communication.
To learn how to use words, a child needs to hear lots of talking. Children learn vocabulary best, in the moment, when they can link a word to an object or an action.
